Fatality brings deaths in car accidents in Hawaii to 30 for 2017

A victim of an auto-pedestrian accident recently succumbed to her injuries after fighting for a month to stay alive. This brought the number of fatalities in car accidents on Hawaii Island to 30 for this year. This accident occurred in Hilo on Sept. 21.

According to an accident report, police received a call about the accident shortly after 10:50 on that day. Upon arrival at the crash scene, they determined that two pedestrians were struck by a sedan. Police say the pedestrians were in a crosswalk at an intersection. Reportedly, the two injured women -- both 86 years old -- were transported to a local hospital.

One woman's condition was critical, and she was later airlifted to another medical facility. Although she was released at a later date, she continued to receive health care but died on Oct. 20 from the injuries she suffered in the accident. The other woman recovered from her injuries. The 88-year-old driver who allegedly knocked down the woman was the subject of a negligent injury investigation, but that has now been changed to negligent homicide inquiry.

After losing loved ones in car accidents, the surviving family members may be entitled to seek financial relief through the civil justice system of Hawaii. However, when a wrongful death lawsuit is filed, the plaintiffs must establish negligence before the court will adjudicate documented claims for a monetary judgment. This process can be simplified with the help of an experienced personal injury attorney. The claims may include financial losses such as the costs of end-of-life arrangements along with emotional damages sustained.
