Medical evaluations essential for claims after auto accidents

Sometimes, crash victims in Hawaii do not realize the importance of a medical evaluation even if injuries seem insignificant. Some common injuries suffered in auto accidents worsen over the following days or weeks, if not identified and treated promptly. One such injury is neck trauma caused by whiplash. The sudden shaking of the head upon crash impact can cause sprains and strains that need therapy, and if disks are herniated, surgery may even be needed.

While upper body injuries are common in car accidents, knees, legs and toes are often cut, bruised or broken, and knees and ankles can be dislocated or have ligaments torn. Fractured bones may require emergency treatment, and while casts might aid the repair of some, bones with multiple fractures might need plates and screws. Compound fractures -- those in which the bone breaks the skin -- are the most serious because there is an added infection risk.

Back injuries can be minor, such as dislocated disks or strains, but blunt force trauma can lead to spinal cord damage that might result in chronic pain or even partial or complete paralysis. The brain is also vulnerable, and when a person's head is violently shaken or struck against the windshield or steering wheel, a concussion can occur. When this condition is minor, rest may resolve the issue, but mild and severe brain trauma will require hospitalization and intensive medical care.

Victims of auto accidents that were caused by the negligence of other parties may have grounds for personal injury lawsuits to pursue recovery of damages. Medical reports and bills from the hospital and doctors will help to motivate claims for financial losses. With the help of an experienced Hawaii attorney, the lawsuit may result in a monetary judgment to cover financial and emotional damages.
