Pedestrian accidents: elderly woman killed in a crosswalk

A recent fatal accident in Chinatown highlights an alarming trend taking place in Hawaii. Pedestrian accidents are occurring more frequently these days. A number of factors could be contributing to the upward trend, such as higher traffic volumes and population spikes. Regardless, any accident involving a pedestrian is more likely to be fatal.

The aforementioned accident occurred just before the afternoon commute at an intersection on Beretania Street. According to reports, an elderly woman and two other pedestrians were crossing the street in a crosswalk when the driver of a white Toyota sped through the red light and plowed into the pedestrians. All three pedestrians were seriously injured in the crash, reports say.

The elderly woman was smashed between the hood of the Toyota and the hood of a BMW, according to authorities. Tragically, she was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The two other pedestrians were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Reportedly, three occupants of the BMW were also injured and sent to a hospital for treatment. Police arrested the driver of the Toyota and charged her with suspicion of negligent homicide, driving under the influence and negligent injury.

These days, pedestrians must remain alert at all times when crossing roads or walking near congested city streets. Drivers face an abundance of distractions that can take focus away from the road. Those in Hawaii who have suffered injuries or the loss of loved ones in pedestrian accidents could benefit by speaking with an experienced attorney. A knowledgeable legal representative could provide guidance and determine the best course of action for families during this difficult time.
