Crosswalk safety is crucial in preventing pedestrian accidents

Pedestrian safety has become a point of emphasis in recent years in Hawaii. Unfortunately, this has been a deadly year on roadways across the state. According to data provided by the Hawaii Department of Transportation, pedestrian accidents have led to 36 deaths so far this year. With overcrowded roads becoming the norm, motorists and pedestrians are urged to always use extreme caution when traveling.

The Department of Transportation and law enforcement officers have stepped up safety efforts statewide. Reportedly, an elderly man was recently struck by a car while inside a crosswalk with no traffic light along Pali Highway on Oahu. This prompted the DOT to place fluorescent signs along the highway near crosswalks in hopes of preventing another accident from occurring.

The owner and operator of a driving school on Oahu says that he teaches drivers to be cautious at all times, especially around crosswalks. He tells his students to slow down any time there are vehicles stopped. The man has been operating the driving school for over 50 years and says he was once the victim of an accident when he was younger. He says the accident taught him to always pay attention.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation says that it will continue efforts to educate the public about traffic safety. Properly sharing the road is the responsibility of everyone, motorists and pedestrians alike. However, those who suffer injury or loss as a result of negligence in pedestrian accidents could benefit from discussions with an experienced attorney. Damages from a successful lawsuit could provide vital compensation for families facing financial difficulties.
