Car accidents: Police continue the fight against drunk driving

It is common knowledge that driving under the influence of alcohol is one of the most dangerous things a person can do. Unfortunately, thousands of people every year choose to drive while intoxicated despite the risks. Too many people die every year in Hawaii and across the country in car accidents caused by intoxicated drivers. According to recent statistics, over 37,000 people were killed in drunk driving accidents in 2017.

Police forces across Hawaii Island recently completed a week-long initiative to combat drunk driving. Police say they arrested a total of 16 people on suspicion of drunk driving during the crackdown. According to reports, Kona police officers nabbed seven suspected drunk drivers, South Kohala officers arrested four drivers and South Hilo law enforcement officers arrested three.

DUI arrests are up in Hawaii this year as opposed to this same time last year. So far this year there have been 336 DUI arrests compared with 324 arrests for DUI at this same time last year, police said. In an encouraging statistic, traffic crashes are down this year compared to last year. Reportedly, there have been 274 major traffic accidents so far this year compared to 379 accidents during this same time last year.

Police forces in the state of Hawaii are taking measures to keep roadways safe and combat the ongoing problem of drunk driving. Just one life lost at the hands of an intoxicated driver is too many. Families in Hawaii who have lost loved ones in car accidents with drunk drivers could benefit from discussions with a legal representative. A successful claim could result in substantial compensation.
