News: 1 dead, 1 injured after vehicle hits parked car in McCully

HONOLULU, HI - A moped rider was critically injured in an accident in Ewa Beach recently, according to a release from the Honolulu Police Department. The incident took place Sept. 1 on Fort Weaver Road near Renton Road just before 1 a.m. The police department's Traffic Division learned that a 57-year-old man was riding a moped west on Renton Road when he disregarded the red traffic signal while making a left at the intersection of Fort Weaver Road. The moped was struck by a northbound motorist, causing the moped rider to be ejected onto the roadway.  He was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.  The man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said. The driver of the vehicle, a 29-year-old man, was not injured and stayed at the scene. It was not immediately clear whether speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the accident. KALAELOA, HI - A woman was killed early yesterday morning when her vehicle collided with a tree near the Kalaeloa Airport. Hawaii News Now reports that the accident happened on Coral Sea Road at about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 13. Authorities say that that a 48-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle in a curve in the roadway. The car ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree. Emergency responders rushed the woman to a nearby hospital, where she died a short time later. She was Oahu's 28th traffic fatality of the year.
