News: Collision on Ponahawai Street in Hilo sends both drivers to hospital
Police responded to the scene on Ponahawai Street between Komohana Street and Kapiolani Street at 8:37 p.m. Officers determined that a 2016 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was traveling up (mauka) Ponahawai Street when the vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a 2013 Toyota Corolla four-door sedan traveling down (makai) Ponahawai Street.
The Tacoma driver, a 77-year-old man, was transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center and was listed in critical condition. The Corolla driver, a 59-year-old woman, was taken to the same hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
At this time, police do not believe that speed, alcohol and/or drugs contributed to the crash.
