News: Lahaina man dead after crashing into tree off on Honoapiilani Highway

PAHOA, HI - A man has died of injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident in Pahoa earlier this month, Hawai‘i Island police report. The victim of the Sept. 5 crash was identified as 53-year-old Joe McDonald of Pahoa. Police determined that McDonald was operating a 2004 Honda Shadow motorcycle traveling south on Highway 137 at about 1:48 p.m. when he lost control and veered off the roadway at around the 14-mile marker. McDonald, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from the motorcycle and was critically injured. He was transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center before being medevacked to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, where he was pronounced dead Sept. 26. At this time, police believe that speed, alcohol, and/or drugs were contributing factors in the incident.   The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit is continuing the investigation. KEKAHA, HI - Police said the driver involved in a fatal bicycle collision in Kekaha Sept. 22 has been arrested, according to The Garden Island.. Investigators learned that 62-year-old Connie Castaneda of Kekaha was driving a 2018 Toyota SUV east on ‘Elepaio Road at about 7 a.m. when she turned left onto Alae Road and struck a 91-year-old man riding a bicycle westbound. The bicycle rider, later identified as 91-year-old Bonifacio Ventura of Kekaha, died after being taken to Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Police said Castaneda has been arrested on charges of first-degree negligent homicide and inattention to driving. The intersection of ‘Elepaio Road and Alae Road was closed for about two hours after the incident as part of the police investigation, which is ongoing. KAHULUI, HI - A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle in Kahului, the Maui Police Department reported. The fatal collision occurred Sept. 9 at about 9:43 p.m. on Kaahumanu Avenue, east of South Papa Avenue. A preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling eastbound within the inner eastbound lane on Kaahumanu Avenue, approaching the intersection of South Wakea Avenue, when the vehicle struck a pedestrian. The pedestrian was walking northbound across Kaahumanu Avenue at the time, out of a marked crosswalk. She was pronounced dead at the scene and was later identified as 61-year-old Lynette Kealoha of Wailuku. The driver of the Equinox, a 70-year-old Wailuku man, was not injured. He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. Investigators have yet to determine whether speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
