News: Driver, 77, dies following two-vehicle collision in Hilo

Car accident in Hilo
HILO, HI - One of the drivers involved in a two-vehicle collision in Hilo has died of his injuries, police said.

According to the Hawaii Island Police Department, the victim of the Oct. 9 crash was identified as 77-year-old Joseph Gomes of Hilo.

Police determined that Gomes was driving a 2016 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck on Ponahawai Street between Komohana and Kapiolani Streets when the incident occurred at about 8:37 p.m.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the Tacoma crossed over the center line and struck a 2013 Toyota Corolla four-door sedan heading east on Ponahawai Street.

Gomes was found unresponsive at the scene. He was transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center and subsequently taken to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu for further treatment, where he passed away on Oct. 14.

The Corolla driver, a 59-year-old woman, was also transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released.

At this time, police do not believe that speed, alcohol and/or drugs were factors in the crash.   The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit is continuing the investigation.
