News: Car accident on H-2 Freeway leaves man, boy injured

HILO, HI - A man was killed in a motorcycle accident at an intersection in Hilo, the Hawaii Police Department reported. Police responded to the area of Kalanianaole Street and Kamehameha Avenue after the incident was reported Sept. 5 at 1:46 a.m. A preliminary investigation determined that the operator of a 2015 Harley Davidson Road Glide motorcycle was traveling west on Kalanianaole Street when he lost control and veered off the roadway. The motorcycle struck a utility pole and the rider was ejected. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene and was later identified as 43-year-old Faavae Maualaivao of Kaneohe. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said. The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit began an investigation and said it is believed that speed was a contributing factor in the fatal wreck. HONOLULU, HI - Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal motorcycle accident that occurred earlier this week on the H-1 Freeway, Hawaii News Now reported. The Honolulu Medical Examiner said the man killed in the wreck was 23-year-old John Mercer East, a firefighter with the Honolulu Fire Department. The incident took place early Tuesday morning in the westbound lanes of the H-1 Freeway near the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. According to police, East was operating a motorcycle at a high rate of speed at about 12:10 a.m. when he lost control of the bike near Ohohia Street and the airport off-ramp at Exit 16A.  The motorcycle crashed into the back of a vehicle and the rider was ejected onto the roadway. East was pronounced dead after being taken to an area hospital.  He was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.  The driver of the vehicle, a 47-year-old man, was hospitalized in serious condition. Investigators said speed was a contributing factor in the crash. PEARL CITY, HI - A motorcyclist was hospitalized after crashing into a vehicle in Pearl City, according to the Honolulu Police Department. The department's Traffic Division said that the Sept. 5 accident took place at about 9:39 p.m. along the eastbound H-1 Freeway. A 31-year-old man was riding a motorcycle east when he crashed into the back of a vehicle that was stalled in the left lane.  The impact caused the motorcycle rider to be ejected onto the roadway, and he was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition.  He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The driver of the stalled vehicle, a 39-year-old man, and two juvenile female rear seat passengers were not injured.  Another juvenile female rear seat passenger reported minor injuries but refused treatment at the scene. It was not known whether speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the collision.
