News: Motorcyclist dies after crashing into utility pole at Hilo intersection

HONOLULU, HI - Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal motorcycle accident that occurred earlier this week on the H-1 Freeway, Hawaii News Now reported. The Honolulu Medical Examiner said the man killed in the wreck was 23-year-old John Mercer East, a firefighter with the Honolulu Fire Department. The incident took place early Tuesday morning in the westbound lanes of the H-1 Freeway near the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. According to police, East was operating a motorcycle at a high rate of speed at about 12:10 a.m. when he lost control of the bike near Ohohia Street and the airport off-ramp at Exit 16A.  The motorcycle crashed into the back of a vehicle and the rider was ejected onto the roadway. East was pronounced dead after being taken to an area hospital.  He was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.  The driver of the vehicle, a 47-year-old man, was hospitalized in serious condition. Investigators said speed was a contributing factor in the crash. PEARL CITY, HI - A motorcyclist was hospitalized after crashing into a vehicle in Pearl City, according to the Honolulu Police Department. The department's Traffic Division said that the Sept. 5 accident took place at about 9:39 p.m. along the eastbound H-1 Freeway. A 31-year-old man was riding a motorcycle east when he crashed into the back of a vehicle that was stalled in the left lane.  The impact caused the motorcycle rider to be ejected onto the roadway, and he was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition.  He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The driver of the stalled vehicle, a 39-year-old man, and two juvenile female rear seat passengers were not injured.  Another juvenile female rear seat passenger reported minor injuries but refused treatment at the scene. It was not known whether speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the collision. HONOLULU, HI - A car accident in Honolulu on Wednesday night left an adult and a child injured, according to Hawaii News Now. The single-vehicle wreck took place on the northbound H-2 Freeway at about 8 p.m.   Honolulu Emergency Medical Services was dispatched to the scene after a car flipped onto its side. Two people suffered minor injuries, a 57-year-old man and a 7-year-old boy.  Emergency crews evaluated the two, who declined transport to the hospital.
