News: 91-year-old bicyclist dies after being struck by vehicle in Kekaha

OCEAN VIEW, HI - The identity of a man killed in a two-vehicle crash in Ocean View has now been released, according to the Hawaiʻi Island Police Department. The victim of the Aug. 15 collision was 45-year-old Jason Jay Spurgeon of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates (HOVE) subdivision. Police responded to the scene near the intersection of Aloha Boulevard and Lehua Lane in HOVE at about 1:15 p.m. Investigators determined that Spurgeon was driving a 2021 Kia Seltos westbound (makai) on Aloha Boulevard when he crossed over the centerline and collided head-on with a 2000 Nissan Altima. The Nissan was operated by a 21-year-old woman, also from HOVE. Spurgeon, who was not wearing a seat belt was pronounced dead at the scene. The 21-year-old woman was transported to the Kona Community Hospital in critical condition and has since been released. The ongoing investigation is being handled by the Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit. PAHOA, HI - A man was critically injured when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed in Pahoa, police said. A release from the Hawaii Police Department stated that the accident took place Sept. 5 in the area of the 14-mile marker on Highway 137. Police responding to a 1:48 p.m. call determined that a 2004 Honda Shadow motorcycle was traveling south on Highway 137 when the operator lost control and veered off the roadway. The rider, a 53-year-old man, was ejected from the motorcycle and suffered critical injuries. He was transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center and then medevacked to Queen’s Medical Center on O’ahu for further treatment. The man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Investigators believe that speed, alcohol and/or drugs were contributing factors in the incident. The motorcyclist was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, driving a motor vehicle with no driver’s license, reckless driving, and no motor vehicle insurance policy. He was released pending investigation due to having been admitted to the hospital. SOUTH KOHALA, HI - A man is facing charges in connection with a fatal head-on collision that occurred in South Kohala, according to the Hawai‘i Police Department. South Kohala patrol officers and emergency crews responded to the Sept. 5 crash on Daniel K. Inouye Highway shortly after 3 p.m. An initial investigation found that the driver of a 2023 Tesla sedan was heading west when he tried to pass several other westbound vehicles by entering the eastbound lane of travel.  During the passing maneuver, the Tesla collided with an eastbound 2020 Harley-Davidson motorcycle.  The Harley then collided with a second motorcycle going east in the same lane.  The Tesla and both motorcycles came to rest down an embankment adjacent to the highway. A 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck that was traveling ahead of the vehicles the Tesla was attempting to pass, sustained damage after being struck by debris from the collision The operator of the Harley-Davidson, identified as 55-year-old William Joseph Simao of Hilo, was pronounced dead at the scene.   The rider of the second motorcycle, a 35-year-old Hilo man, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center with significant injuries. The Tesla driver, identified as 39-year-old Jeremy Alexander Fleming of Hilo, was treated for minor injuries and then arrested.  Fleming was charged with manslaughter, negligent homicide in the second degree, and negligent injury in the first degree.
