News: Man facing charges in fatal collision on Daniel K. Inouye Highway

OCEAN VIEW, HI - The identity of a man killed in a two-vehicle crash in Ocean View has now been released, according to the Hawaiʻi Island Police Department. The victim of the Aug. 15 collision was 45-year-old Jason Jay Spurgeon of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates (HOVE) subdivision. Police responded to the scene near the intersection of Aloha Boulevard and Lehua Lane in HOVE at about 1:15 p.m. Investigators determined that Spurgeon was driving a 2021 Kia Seltos westbound (makai) on Aloha Boulevard when he crossed over the centerline and collided head-on with a 2000 Nissan Altima. The Nissan was operated by a 21-year-old woman, also from HOVE. Spurgeon, who was not wearing a seat belt was pronounced dead at the scene. The 21-year-old woman was transported to the Kona Community Hospital in critical condition and has since been released. The ongoing investigation is being handled by the Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit. KEKAHA, HI - An elderly man was killed in an accident while riding his bicycle in Kekaha on Tuesday morning, police said. According to the Kauai Police Department, officers responded to the collision on Elepaio Road at about 7 a.m. Preliminary details indicated that a 62-year-old woman was driving a 2018 Toyota SUV eastbound on ʻElepaio Road when she made a left turn onto Alae Road and collided with a westbound bicyclist. The bicycle rider, a 91-year-old man from Kekaha, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. He was transported to Kauaʻi Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The intersection of ʻElepaio Road and Alae Road was closed for about two hours while officers with the Kauaʻi Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section investigated at the scene. The cause of the collision remains under investigation. Police said speed and impairment do not appear to have been contributing factors in the incident. PAHOA, HI - A man was critically injured when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed in Pahoa, police said. A release from the Hawaii Police Department stated that the accident took place Sept. 5 in the area of the 14-mile marker on Highway 137. Police responding to a 1:48 p.m. call determined that a 2004 Honda Shadow motorcycle was traveling south on Highway 137 when the operator lost control and veered off the roadway. The rider, a 53-year-old man, was ejected from the motorcycle and suffered critical injuries. He was transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center and then medevacked to Queen’s Medical Center on O’ahu for further treatment. The man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Investigators believe that speed, alcohol and/or drugs were contributing factors in the incident. The motorcyclist was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, driving a motor vehicle with no driver’s license, reckless driving, and no motor vehicle insurance policy. He was released pending investigation due to having been admitted to the hospital.
